The Deer Mouse
Published in Hardcover by Permanent Press (June, 1997)
Author: Ken Grant
Average review score:

Soul-touching tale of struggle in any walk of life.
This book not only tells the story of hardships suffered by a ranching family in Wyoming, but of every person who has ever felt an obligation to continue a dying family legacy. The authors use of words is heartfelt at least and soul-touching at best. Oprah, this is definitely one for your book of the month club!

Wild and Crazy Fun
I have to say, this is a wonderful mix of fright and fun and just some really off the wall humor tossed in. There are a lot of tasty little tales in this collection, something for everyone.

Descent of spirit : writings of E.L. Grant Watson
Published in Unknown Binding by Primavera Press ()
Author: Elliot L. Grant Watson
Average review score:

Wonderful, wondrous.
Elliot Lovegood Grant Watson was one of those rare naturalists/philosophers who didn't lose their wonder when studying the natural world. In a series of short anecdotes and essays Watson brings out exactly this sense of wonder in the everyday organisms such as ants, wasps, beetles and people themselves.

He describes with loving detail and a real sense of the writer who knows how to write, given his talent for writing novels, the life of a butterfly in symbiotic communion with a particular species of ant. He shows how a man brought up in civilisation can become a natural part of the wild environment once he open his heart, not just his eyes. He tells of life in Fiji with the natives and their peculiar ways, the almost homecoming he experienced during his time with Australian Aborigines. This includes, the contraversial story, "Out There", about the harsh and very real story of a white ranch manager and his association with Aboriginal women. He talks of many places and times with a very wide knowledge not only in a literal sense but also as a man of experience of the natural, wild, places. His description of silence in a deep cavern is remarkable, or the presence of tree roots at a depth of 160 ft is astonising.

It is an eloquent book, even if it doesn't really, except on one or two occasions, really challange Darwinian evolutionary dogma as was intended, it is a book of great beauty and in addition to a very few, such as Adolf Portmann's "Animal Forms and Patterns" is not seen much anymore in serious biological circles. Most unfortunate as the hardline mechanistic paradigm holds on tenaciously.

Wonderful, wondrous.

Design That Cares: Planning Health Facilities for Patients and Visitors
Published in Paperback by Amer Hospital Pub (September, 1998)
Authors: Janet Reizenstein Carpman and Myron A. Grant
Average review score:

Why aren't there more books like this?
I design buildings for a living and this book has permanently changed my outlook. Although about health care buildings, it's a blueprint for thinking about the needs of building occupants for any kind of institution. The authors obviously understand building users better than anyone I've ever dealt with. There are great insights in every chapter, and the sidebars alone are a great education. In my opinion this is required reading for architects and facility managers. The 2nd edition is even better than the first.

Designing Successful Grant Proposals
Published in Paperback by Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development (15 May, 1996)
Author: Donald C. Orlich
Average review score:

Only book you need.
Of the three or four grant writing books I've gotten at Amazon.com this is by far the best and only one you will need. Most everything can be found on the internet, all you have to do is spend the time to rummage through it and put your program together.

I highly recommend this book. You need no other.

Diamond Series: Introduction to Bridge Play of the Hand
Published in Paperback by Amer Contract Bridge League (June, 1900)
Author: Audrey Grant
Average review score:

Both beginners and experts need help with bridge
This book was recommended to me, to help brush up on the basics after several years of not playing. I have since purchased the whole series.

I recommend having them on hand. In the Diamond series, the book touches on conventions (Blackwood and Stayman) but it is a really a good place to get a solid of understanding for the basics.

DNA & Destiny: Nature & Nurture in Human Behavior
Published in Hardcover by Perseus Publishing (September, 2001)
Author: R. Grant Steen
Average review score:

Delivers
Excellent look at the question of "Nature Versus Nurture In Human Behavior", assuming you like getting facts and percentages from good quantitative studies, and you'd also like to know why the studies were good, and you don't want any speculative unified theories. It rambles off the point from time to time, though I found it rambles fairly engagingly myself. My favorite item in the book is about schizophrenia in identical twins. If one identical twin has it, the chances the other has it are around 1 in 3. When one with and one without the disease are looked at with magnetic resonance imaging it can be seen that their brains are significantly different in structure and function.

Duke Nukem 3d Construction Kit: Unauthorized (Secrets of the Games Series.)

DUKE IT OUT YOUR WAY!
This is a great book. It makes in seem so simple to use! My friend has this book and he loves it. Definitly a good book. The only problem is sometimes it can be a small bit complicated.

The early charters of Essex
Published in Unknown Binding by Leicester University Press ()
Author: Cyril E. Hart
Average review score:

Definitive
Here are the Anglo-Saxon charters of Essex, as were known at the time that this book was published. It is indispensible to anyone interested in the history of Essex, England.

It is high time that the two volumes were conjoined into a second edition, supplemented by the newly discovered charters, and as many Anglo-saxon wills mentioning Essex property as possible. This material has to be considered by all local historians of the county.
